HSK 2026: Levels, Format, Registration and Study Paths
HSK 3.0 officially starts on 13 December 2026. Separate trial tests from regular bookings, check your exam syllabus and speaking requirements, and plan registration and preparation.

Checked 14 October 2026. HSK is undergoing a transition: a language proficiency standard, a trial exam and the exam you booked are not interchangeable. Do not replace your preparation syllabus simply because a textbook says “HSK 3.0”.
What is changing, and when?
The 2021 proficiency standard describes three stages and nine levels; it does not mean every HSK 1–6 sitting immediately switched format or vocabulary lists. HSK 7–9 is an advanced combined assessment, not evidence of a universal change to lower-level bookings.
The official second global HSK 3.0 trial took place on 20 September 2026. A trial is a specific sitting with its own arrangements. The official worldwide launch is 13 December 2026. As of this review, that launch is still in the future.

Old HSK 1–6 word lists, the 2021 standard’s learning targets and the formal 3.0 exam syllabus serve different purposes. This guide does not present standard vocabulary totals as current exam requirements. Build your word list from the syllabus for your booked version.
Format and speaking requirements
For regular HSK 1–6 preparation, confirm the listening, reading and writing tasks against the applicable sample paper. Paper-based and computer-based testing require different input practice; practise the format you booked.
Do not assume speaking is always optional or separately booked. The September 3.0 trial required levels 3–6 to register with the corresponding speaking test. That trial rule should not be silently applied to every regular booking or treated as the complete formal-launch rules. Verify the speaking arrangement on your chosen sitting and your programme’s requirements.
Registration for 13 December 2026
The official launch notice directs candidates to ChineseTest to choose a centre and register online. Its deadlines are 16 November 2026 at 24:00 for paper-based tests and 3 December 2026 at 24:00 for computer-based tests, both Beijing time (UTC+8). Check centre availability, local fees, identification rules and speaking registration before paying. A published registration window does not guarantee a seat at every centre.
If you already have a booking, inspect it first rather than paying for a second test. Confirm version, date, level, format, speaking component and application deadline with the centre and receiving institution.
A preparation path tied to your booking
- Download the applicable syllabus and sample questions; take a diagnostic paper.
- Practise pinyin, tones, character recognition and vocabulary in sentences at beginner levels.
- At intermediate levels, time listening and reading sections and practise the required written input method.
- At advanced levels, add longer reading and structured output, using the task types from your actual exam.
- Schedule speaking practice where required and allow time for results before your application deadline. Progress depends on starting level and weekly study time; a fixed number of months is not a guarantee.
Frequently asked questions
Is HSK 3.0 already the universal current exam? No. Trials and the 2021 standard do not mean all regular bookings changed. The official worldwide launch is 13 December 2026; check your specific sitting.
Must I abandon old HSK materials? No. Match materials to the booked exam’s syllabus. For a formal 3.0 sitting, use its official syllabus and sample questions rather than substituting the 2021 standard’s vocabulary targets.
