The HSK (Hanyu Shuiping Kaoshi, 汉语水平考试) is the standardised Chinese proficiency exam administered by Hanban/CTI, and it has been through a full redesign. If your information about "HSK 1–6" comes from older textbooks or pre-2021 study guides, a significant part of it is now out of date — the vocabulary targets, the level structure, and even the number of levels have changed. This guide covers the current system: what the levels mean, what each exam contains, how to register, and how to sequence your study.
The HSK 3.0 standard (2021) expanded the scale from 6 levels to 9 and roughly doubled the vocabulary targets at each level — old HSK 6's 5,000 words now sits around Level 6's 5,000+ but with far heavier literacy demands, while the old "advanced" band now extends to Levels 7–9 with a single combined exam. Most learners' practical targets are unchanged though: HSK 4 for working Mandarin, HSK 5–6 for degree study in Chinese.

The 7–9 band is examined by one paper; your final level is determined by score bands rather than choosing a separate "HSK 7 test".
HSK 3.0 Changed the Map
The 2021 standard expanded HSK from 6 to 9 levels and roughly doubled vocabulary targets per level. Certificates never expire, but pre-2021 "HSK 6" study lists no longer match the current Level 6 exam.
What Each Exam Actually Contains
Levels 1–2 have only Listening and Reading (about 35–55 minutes). From Level 3 upward, the written exam adds Writing — sentence reordering and character writing at Level 3, progressing to short compositions by Level 5–6. Listening is played twice at Levels 1–2 and once only from Level 3 — the one-pass discipline that also matters in IELTS applies here.
Speaking is a separate exam — the HSKK (初级/中级/高级, Basic / Intermediate / Advanced). Universities and some employers ask for HSKK alongside the written HSK, so check your target programme's exact requirement before assuming "HSK 5" covers everything.
Home and international test centres offer both paper-based and internet-based formats; content and timing are identical. A growing number of centres also offer a home edition with remote proctoring — confirm availability with your local centre.
Speaking Is a Separate Exam (HSKK)
The written HSK does not test speaking. Universities commonly require an HSKK level alongside the written certificate — check your programme requirements before assuming HSK 5 alone is enough.
Registration and Fees
Registration runs through the official CTI registration platform (chinesetest.cn) or your local Confucius Institute / university test centre:
- Create an account and pick a level — test dates cluster monthly in China and 3–6 times a year at smaller international centres.
- Choose a format — internet-based slots are more plentiful; paper seats are limited.
- Pay the fee — level-dependent, roughly equivalent to ¥250–650 in China or US$20–100 internationally. HSKK is booked and paid separately.
- Bring your passport on test day — same rule as every international exam: the ID must match the registration exactly.
Scores are posted online about two weeks later and certificates are valid for life (institutions may still prefer recent results — many universities want a certificate no older than two years).
Study Paths That Actually Reach Each Level
- Level 1–2 (2–4 months total): pinyin mastery, tone pairs drilled in sentences (not isolated syllables), the top ~1,300 words in frequency order, and 300–600 characters. Apps carry this phase; the failure mode is skipping handwriting entirely and hitting a wall at Level 3's Writing section.
- Level 3–4 (6–12 months from scratch): the jump that matters. Add character handwriting practice from day one, graded readers over textbooks alone, and spoken-output practice — the HSKK is easy to neglect until you need it.
- Level 5–6 (1.5–3 years): the transition from "learner materials" to native materials: short news (The Paper, Sixth Tone), podcasts at 1.0× (not slowed), and a serious anki habit for the 2,000+ new words. Reading speed, not vocabulary size, is usually the binding constraint at Level 5.

Frequently Asked Questions
Is old HSK 6 still valid? Yes — certificates never expire. But study materials labelled "HSK 6" published before 2021 target the old 5,000-word list; for current Level 6 you need the 3.0 word lists.
Can I take two levels in one day? Written HSK and HSKK are separate papers; centres sometimes schedule them on the same day but you must register and pay for each.
How is HSK different from the TOCFL? TOCFL is Taiwan's Mandarin proficiency test with a different word list (Traditional characters) and different level structure. Mainland university admissions expect HSK; some Taiwan programmes prefer TOCFL.
Do I need to know traditional characters? HSK tests Simplified only. If you plan to work in Taiwan, Hong Kong or Macau, plan separate Traditional-character reading practice after HSK 4 or so.
