The Application Chain, End to End
- Offer + CoE. Apply to your institution, accept the offer, pay the deposit — the school then issues the Confirmation of Enrolment (CoE), which you need before lodging the visa.
- English + health + character. Your course's English requirement (IELTS/PTE etc., usually set by the school), an overseas student health cover (OSHC) policy for your whole stay, and health examinations arranged via the department's panel physicians.
- Financial evidence. The 2026 living-cost requirement is AUD 29,710 per year on top of tuition, first travel costs and school-age dependants' costs. Evidence: deposits, loans, or eligible family income.
- GS questions + evidence. Answer every GS question with specifics that your documents can back up.
- Lodge and pay. Online via ImmiAccount; the application charge sits around AUD 1,600–2,000 (it has risen annually).
Processing runs weeks to a couple of months depending on sector and season — lodge as early as your CoE allows rather than gambling on quoted averages.

Work Rights and Conditions
The subclass 500 lets you work up to 48 hours per fortnight during study sessions and unlimited hours during official breaks. Course-work Master's and PhD students have no cap. Two conditions to respect: work must not start before your course starts, and consistent overwork is a visa-cancellation risk that immigration enforcement actively monitors.
Dependants and Post-Study Routes
Unlike the UK, all student visa levels can include dependants (partner + children), with schooling and OSHC costs to budget. After your degree, the Temporary Graduate visa (subclass 485) gives 2–4 years of post-study work rights depending on qualification level and field — nursing, teaching and other priority fields earn the longer end.
